Gigantic Brewing's 5th Anniversary Greatest Hits Lineup


Look who's turning 5! Gigantic Brewing celebrates their half-decade anniversary on May 9th. Gigantic has always followed a very unorthodox strategy for their beer lineup. They brew one year-round offering (Gigantic IPA) and various seasonals throughout the year. These seasonals are one-offs creations that are brewed ONE TIME only, never to return. Ever. Never-ever. Well, except for now...

In honor of their 5th Anniversary, Gigantic is resurrecting 10 of their customers' all-time favorites in a 15-month long celebration. In addition, they will be holding Gigantic Beer Week from May 4 - May 11. Check out the Gigantic website and the press release below for more details.

Gigantic Brewing  Announces 5th Anniversary “Greatest Hits” Lineup

PORTLAND, Ore. (March 28)- We said we would never brew our seasonal beers more than once, but to celebrate our 5th anniversary we are bringing back some of the most loved brews in our catalogue of ever changing seasonal beers. We will be brewing an entire year of Gigantic “Greatest Hits” starting in April 2017 and running to June 2018 (It’s a gigantic 15 month year).

We are always being asked when we will brew “that” seasonal beer again. So at the end of last year we asked our taproom patrons, as well as those online and around the world to vote for their favorite Gigantic seasonal beer. We received hundreds of votes and after counting, and re-counting, we are happy to announce the beers selected by Gigantic drinkers.

We will start our “Greatest Hits” reissue collection where it all began, with Axes of Evil and The City Never Sleeps. Both beers were our top vote getters and we are proud to re-brew and drink these beers again. Gigantic 5th Anniversary reissue beers will be signified by a special “5 Years Greatest Hits” stamp.  The beers will also come paired with songs from local musicians.

Full Sail Releases Sesión Cerveza Mexican Style Lager


Full Sail Brewing's rapid fire pace of additions continues with its Session line of beers. They kicked off the year with the release of Session Black Cherry Black. A few weeks ago, they launched Session Premium Lager in cans. Now they're headed south of the border and adding Sesión Cerveza Mexican Style Lager to their year-round lineup.

It's an intriguing move. I've only seen a handful of craft breweries release a Mexican-style lager as a limited release, but I'm not aware of any that have added one as a year-round offering.

In a departure from other Session beers, Sesión Cerveza utilizes flaked corn in the malt billFlaked corn is commonly used in the production of light lagers and produces a beer that's lighter in color and and flavor.

Full Sail sent me a sample 6-pack. I cracked open a bottle, and first noticed its pale straw color. The picture below doesn't do it justice, but it's quite pale. Grass and lemon come through in aroma. The taste starts with bread and light cereal, followed by spicy hops in the middle. It's light bodied, crisp, and finishes dry with a light note of citrus. Mexican-style lagers have never cracked my beer drinking rotation. With summer quickly approaching, I can see myself drinking a few of these... Terminal Gravity's Roshambo Hoppy Pale Ale


Today, Terminal Gravity Brewing announced the release of its newest seasonal, Roshambo Hoppy Pale Ale. This beer showcases Denali, a new hop variety. For those of you that are totally into your hops, here's a description from Hopsteiner:

Denali (formerly known as Hopsteiner #06277) is an aroma-type hop, originated from a cross between Nugget and the son of a cross between Zeus and USDA 19058 male. Denali has a big aroma that imparts Pineapple with notes of Citrus and Pine. It is quite popular with brewers who are looking for a distinct, big flavor in their beers. Denali has an unusually high total essential oil content averaging more than 4 grams oil/100grams of raw hops.

Terminal Gravity Brewing Releases Roshambo Hoppy Pale Ale

Enterprise, OR -- Old man winter is on the retreat! It’s time to trade the Bog boots for the Chaco sandles and the stouts for the summer pale ales. We’re proud to introduce a new seasonal bottled beer for the season’s enjoyment. 

Roshambo Hoppy Pale Ale is an American Pale Ale brewed with copious amounts of Denali and Eureka! hops. 11th Annual Portland Cheers to Belgian Beers


Portland Cheers to Belgian Beers returns for its 11th year on June 2-3 at The North Warehouse. This year, the 83 participating breweries will utilize the Imperial Yeast B45 Gnome yeast strain. Here's Imperial's descriptions of the strain:

Gnome is the yeast for brewing Belgian inspired beers in a hurry. This strain is extremely flocculent and drops out of the beer quickly after fermentation. Gnome produces a nice phenolic character that goes well with hops, as well as with caramel and toffee flavors. Great for Belgian ales that need to be crystal clear without filtration.

I attended PCTBB for the first time last year, and was extremely impressed by the diversity of the beers, even though they were all produced by the same strain. Advance MercPerk tickets on sale now for 11th annual
Cheers to Belgian Beers festival, taking place June 2 and 3
PORTLAND, Ore. – March 20, 2017 – The early bird gets the worm, or in this case, beer! Advance tickets are on sale now for Portland’s Cheers to Belgian Beers festival, which features up to 70 Belgian-style beers brewed by Oregon craft brewers using the same single yeast strain. The 11th annual event will take place June 2 and 3 at The North Warehouse at 723 N. Tillamook St. Hours are 1pm to 9pm on Friday and 12pm to 8pm on Saturday.

Drink packages at the door costs $20 for a souvenir glass and eight drink tickets. Discount tickets are on sale now at MercPerks, with two tasting glasses and 16 drink tickets for $28 ($40 value), while supplies last. The event is for ages 21 and over.

This year’s featured yeast strain is Imperial Yeast B45 Gnome, a yeast that creates crystal clear Belgian ales in a short amount of time. Gnome produces peach and apricot esters with a Belgian phenolic character that can be manipulated through temperature. It pairs well with hops, while also complementing malt and caramel characters.

To ensure the diversity of the yeast strain, as well as show off the creativity of Oregon craft brewers, the color and strength of each brewery’s beer is determined by a dart throw. More than 80 breweries took part in this year’s dart throw, held on Jan. 16 at The Evergreen, the private event space at the Loyal Legion. Depending on where the dart landed on the board, a brewer was directed to brew a Belgian-style beer that will be either light or dark in color, with amber as the midpoint; and either lower or higher in alcohol, with six percent being the baseline. Four breweries hit a bullseye, meaning they get to choose their color and strength.

Portland’s Cheers to Belgian Beers takes place inside The North Warehouse as well as outside in the tented parking lot. Food is available from Urban German Grill. Street parking is available, but limited. Attendees are encouraged to take public transportation — the TriMet Bus Line 35 stops one block away and the Yellow Max Line stops two blocks away — or ride their bike, with complimentary bike parking available.

4th Annual Cider Rite of Spring, March 25


Cider Rite of Spring returns on March 25! This is your chance to taste nearly 100 ciders from 30 different cidermakers. Formerly held at The Tiffany Center, the festival has moved to The Evergreen PDX.

Pyramid Brewing Releases Brewer's Reserve: H7 Imperial IPA


Pyramid Brewing will soon release its Brewer's Reserve H7 Imperial IPA. This limited edition beer showcase seven hop varieties, with three additions in the boil, one in whirlpool, and two more for good measure during fermentation.

Pyramid's last two Brewer's Reserve releases have been impressive. I recently tasted and profiled Barrel Aged Snow Cap and Railroad Avenue Imperial Porter. I tasted H7 back in August 2015. Looking at my Untappd history, it appears that I liked it.

2017 Home Hop Garden: Growing Season Underway!


Yesterday was a beautiful day in the Portland area. It was dry, sunny and the temperature hit the low 60s. All the neighbors ventured out of their caves, into the blinding sunlight. I spent some time doing yard cleanup, and was pleasantly surprised to see my that my hop plants have started to poke their way through the ground. Pictures below.

I know there's not much to see here, but I was glad to see them. I planted two new rhizomes in large above-ground planters last spring. They grew well, but we had a pretty brutal winter (as for as Northwest winters go) and I was worried they wouldn't survive. Fortunately, they did. It's hard to believe, but in a few short months, they'll be over 20 feet tall!

My hop garden now consists of a soon-to-be third year Willamette, a second year Centennial, and a second year Chinook. I don't think it's possible to have too many hop plans. With that in mind, I'll expand my garden by planting two new rhizomes this spring.  I'll think I'll go with Cascade and Columbus.

Kells Brewery announces inaugural Irish Beer Festival held in conjunction with St. Patrick’s Day Weekend

PORTLAND, Ore. – Kells Brewery has announced it will host the inaugural Irish Beer Festival, a new event scheduled for St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The Irish Beer Festival, which will feature specialty Irish style beers and cider from a dozen area breweries, will take place March 17 to March 19 in the tented and heated parking lot of Kells Brew Pub at 210 NW 21st Ave.

Participating breweries include 54°40′ Brewing, Burnside Brewing, Cascade Brewing, Cider Riot!, Culmination Brewing, Deschutes Brewery, Grixsen Brewing, Hopworks Urban Brewery, Kells Brewery, Lompoc Brewing, Lucky Lab Brewpub and Mt. Hood Brewing. Many of the beers are being brewed specifically for the event.

Event hours are 11am to 1am on March 17 and March 18, and 10am to 6pm on March 19. Early admission before 4pm daily is $10, which includes a souvenir logo pint glass and seven taster tokens. After 4pm, admission is $20, which includes the glass, tokens and the cover charge into the adjoining Kells Irish Festival.

In addition to beer tasting, there will be Irish dancers, bagpipers, live music and Irish food specials all three days. Minors are welcome daily until 4pm. Attendees are encouraged to travel between the Irish Beer Festival and the Kells Irish Festival next door.

9 Questions with Modern Times Founder, Jacob McKean


San Diego-based Modern Times Beer has set their sights on Portland. The rapidly growing brewery will begin distribution across Oregon this week. Modern Times was founded by Jacob McKean in 2013. I originally met Jacob back in 2010 at the Inaugural Beer Bloggers Conference. At the time he was working at Stone Brewing Co. He later left Stone to launch Modern Times. Long story short, Jacob and Modern Times have been wildly successful. I reached out to Jacob to learn more about about Modern Times' expansion to Oregon.




Welcome to Portland! Breweries from across the country (Founders Brewing, Left Hand Brewing, and now Modern Times) have recently announced that they will begin distributing beer in Portland. What were your reasons for choosing Portland?

Jacob McKean:  I personally love Portland, and the advanced beer scene there is a great fit for Modern Times. We tend to do best in places where people really know beer, so it makes a lot of sense for us to distribute there. I also think our commitment to business ethics, our design aesthetic, and our style of brewing will all mesh well with the PDX beer scene.



Back in 2010, you worked for Stone Brewing Co. as their Social Media Coordinator. When did you first have the idea to start your own brewery? Did your experience at Stone help you?

JM:  Yes, my experience at Stone helped enormously. Like a lot of homebrewers, I had long harbored a dream of starting my own place. After a couple of years at Stone, I felt like the time was right to make it happen and it seemed like the world was ready for what I had in mind.



At barely 4 years old, Modern Times is a very young brewery. To what do you attribute your success? How have you been able to stand out from the crowd of other nascent breweries?

JM: The short answer is that we give the same level of attention to everything we do. Obviously the quality of our beer is the most important component of our success, but we pay just as much attention to our artwork, our logistics, our sales, our employee benefits, and everything else we do. That is the difference maker. 



Will your full line (core, core cans, and monthly special releases) be released in Portland?

JM: Yup, everything. All year round stuff, monthly special releases, seasonals, the works. 



The new trend in craft beer is "drink local", as consumers are favoring freshness, supporting local business, and reducing the environmental footprint (shipping filled glass/cans around the country is expensive). What are your thoughts on "drink local"?

JM:  I'm generally in favor and we've certainly benefitted from it enormously, but I don't think anything should come before quality. If the beer you're drinking isn't world class, then it doesn't matter where it came from. 



Modern Times also produces a line of artisan coffees.  How did this come about?  We like coffee in the Northwest. Will yours be available here?

JM:  It began as essentially a side project: I knew we were going to use a ton of coffee for Black House, our year round coffee oatmeal stout, so I decided to roast it ourselves. As with homebrewing, I had been home roasting, so it was a natural extension of that passion for the hobby. Now Modern Times Coffee has grown into it's own arm of the company, and the training and sophistication of the coffee professionals we have hired vastly outstrips my own. It's been incredibly exciting to see it grow and progress: our Black House Blend was named the #2 blend in the world by Coffee Review, and we now have a full cafe in our tasting room at the brewery.



You recently made a public statement condemning actions of the Trump administration. You state, "We love you, we stand with you, & we will do everything we can to defend you."  What do these words mean to you beyond a social media tweet? How do they translate into actions that you or Modern Times have taken (or will take)? 

JM:  To our employees it meant that we will do everything in our power to protect them from whatever insanity comes down from the federal government. To our fans, it meant that we value each and every single one of them, and we're incredibly proud to have a very diverse fanbase that includes immigrants from all over the world. We wouldn't want it any other way. And to other breweries, it meant that they can stand up too. Our industry shouldn't be afraid to do what's right and say what's right.



Looking back at the brewery's history, is there anything you would do differently in hindsight?

JM:  I would've raised more money. I would've slept a lot better in the early years if I hadn't cut it so close. 



What's next for Modern Times?  What do you hope the brewery will look like in 5 years?

JM:  Five years is a lifetime away. Right now I'm focused on the three new locations we're building: a brewpub & cafe in downtown Los Angeles; a funky foudre brewery, restaurant, and cafe in Anaheim; and a tasting room in Encinitas. Those are huge projects that are absorbing a lot of my energy right now. Beyond that, it's hard to say.

The Bruery Releases Share This™ OC: Imperial Stout for Charity

  
I absolutely love Imperial Stouts! Last year, The Bruery launched the recurring Share This™ series of Imperial Stouts that make use of unique ingredients. Even better, as a way of giving back, the The Bruery donates $1 from each purchase to a charitable organization in the region that inspired or contributed to each release's signature ingredient.

The first release in the Share This™series showcased coffee from the Philippines. The second release featured mole from Mexico. The Bruery donated $50,000 to support the Free Wheelchair Mission's charitable work each country.

The Bruery just announced the third release in this charitable series. Share This™:OC features orange zest, cacao nibs and vanilla beans. Appropriately, this beer will benefit Food Forward, a produce bank in Orange County. It sounds like a delicious combination!

Share This™:OC will be distributed across The Bruery's national footprint. If you're an imperial stout fan, keep an eye out for it.  Great beer and a worthy causeit doesn't get much better than that! For more details, check out the press release below.

The Bruery® partners with local charity Food Forward® for their third Share This® charitable imperial stout release featuring Orange, Chocolate

For each bottle of Share This: OC produced, the craft brewery will donate $1 towards Food Forward’s produce recovery efforts in Southern California.

Placentia, CA:  The Bruery’s third installment in their Share This series of imperial stouts will be released to the public starting in March. Each Share This beer is made in partnership with a charity in order to give money back to the region which inspired, or contributed to, the beer’s flavor profile.

The third release in this series was inspired by The Bruery’s home county and its history as a significant growing region for oranges. It is the first time the donation will go towards efforts in the United States, with a hyperlocal focus on Food Forward’s work in Southern California. The rich, imperial stout base, already chock full of notes of chocolate and roast, is dosed with orange zest, TCHO cacao nibs, and vanilla beans, to create the orange-chocolate Share This: OC.

"It’s hard to not have an affinity for oranges when you grow up in Orange County," shared The Bruery Founder & CEO Patrick Rue. "Oranges and chocolate are a natural pair, each flavor enhancing the other. We’re excited to bring this flavor combination to Share This, and to support Food Forward, a local charity that benefits our community by providing delicious, fresh fruit to those who might not have access to it otherwise."

You’ll recall in June 2016, Share This: Coffee debuted, supporting Free Wheelchair Mission’s efforts in the Philippines. Mostra Coffee carefully sourced Bourbon & Catimor variety coffee beans from the Cagat family farm of the highlands of Mindanao island to match the beer’s roasty profile. Later in October, Share This: Mole brought a collaboration with Certified Cicerone® and Chef Anne Conness, who helped The Bruery create an ideal blend of ancho chilies, chipotle peppers, cinnamon, vanilla, and cacao nibs to create a rich mole stout to benefit Free Wheelchair Mission’s efforts in Mexico.

Beers in the Share This series are released twice annually, with the next release to be announced in fall of 2017. The Bruery has donated $50,000 for Share This: Coffee, and has committed the donation of an additional $50,000 for Share This: Mole, to Free Wheelchair Mission.

Throughout the month of March, the beer will be hitting retail shelves in The Bruery’s national distribution footprint.
