Old Dominion's Double D and Morning Glory in Six Packs

Old Dominion Brewing Co. (Dover, DE) recently announced the release of Double D Double IPA and Morning Glory Espresso Stout in 12 oz. bottles. Previously released in 22 oz. bombers, the new 12 oz. six-packs will be available year-round.

Both beers sport vintage pinup girl label designs and a healthy dose of double entendre.  These labels represent quite a departure from their more traditional designs (shown on the right).

Anyway, I've previously tasted and enjoyed their Oak Barrel Stout. So I'll look forward to tasting these new beers (samples provided by Old Dominion). For more on Double D and Morning Glory, check out the press release below.

Dominion Brewing Announces Six-Packs of
Double D and Morning Glory

Dover, DE – Dominion Brewing fan favorites Double D and Morning Glory will be moving from 22oz bombers to 12oz six packs.
At the end of February, pinup girls Double D and Morning Glory will be welcomed to the Dominion Brewing year-round family.  Double D is a full-bodied Imperial India Pale Ale, flaunting sultry guava, mango, and tropical fruit aromas as a result of dry hopping with Citra, Zythos and Crystal hops.  Brewed with light toasted malt and Bravo bittering hops, this double delights with smooth warming alcohols and a torrid finish.  This daring draft will deploy at 9.0% ABV and 90 IBUs. Glory is a full-bodied Espresso Stout that utilizes locally roasted coffee beans.  Waking up at 9% ABV with the aroma of espresso and taste of chocolate, she will give drinkers a jolt.

President and CEO of Fordham & Dominion Brewing, Jim Lutz, stated, “When we sat down to design the artwork for our pinup series we made sure that the labels reflected the personality of the beer inside.  Our visionary artist, Ryan Telle, really nailed it with Double D and Morning Glory. We are excited to bring this remarkable artwork to six-packs.”
Cherry Blossom Lager will be available in 12oz six-packs and on draft. It will hit shelves and taps in the Mid-Atlantic region in March 2013.

###
The Fordham & Dominion Brewing Co. history is the story of two Delmarva craft breweries deciding to buck tradition and defy the ordinary.  In 2007, Fordham and Dominion combined forces in Dover, DE. The breweries jumped at the chance to challenge expectations, merging two craft breweries while maintaining their separate identities.

Fordham has been brewing since 1995 and Dominion has been brewing since 1989.  Together, they brew out of Dover, Delaware. They provide weekly tours of the brewery (located at 1284 McD Dr., Dover, DE) in conjunction with samples of their beers, such as Oak Barrel Stout, Double D, Rams Head IPA and Copperhead Ale.  For more information, visit FordhamBrewing.com or OldDominion.com.

Smuttynose's ParadoX, Bloom, and Baltic Porter

Smuttynose Brewing Co. (Portsmouth,
NH) recently announced the launch of three limited release beers.

Baltic Porter is Release #2 of Smuttynose's 2013 Big Beer Series. Bloom and ParadoX are both part of their very limited release Short Batch Series of experimental beers. Here are some details about each:

  • Baltic Porter:  This beer rated "95" on BeerAdvocate and in Wine Enthusiast and "100" on Rate Beer. It's widely considered one of the best examples of the style. 9.8% ABV, 35 IBU.
  • Bloom: A Belgian golden ale brewed with edible flowers. Only 25.5 barrels were produced and a portion has been released in 750 ml cage and cork bottles. 6.5% ABV, 18 IBU.
  • ParadoX:  It's a session IPA, brewed with an experimental hop variety (01210, it's really lemony) and a portion of New England grown malt. 5.3% ABV, 40 IBU.

The brewery was kind enough to send me a bottle of each beer to sample. I'll post detailed profiles of each after I taste them. Later this summer, I'll be visiting some breweries in the Northeast. I'll be sure to make a stop at Smuttynose!

Portland Famhouse and Wild Ale Festival at Saraveza

I'm a huge fan of big beer festivals that offer a wide range of styles. But it's also fun to delve deeper into a particular style and explore the variety that it offers. Recently, Farmhouse and Wild ales have been growing in popularity.

So here's your chance to learn (and taste) more! Saraveza will be hosting Portland's first Farmhouse and Wild Ale Festival on March 30 - 31. For more information and the full taplist, check out the details below.

Farmhouse-style beers are among the most rustic and traditional ales of the farming regions of France and Belgium and until recently were virtually unknown in America. In recent years breweries of the Pacific NW have helped bring about the resurgence of these beers with traditional methods like using locally grown ingredients that may be found in our farms and fields.

Portland's first ever Farmhouse and Wild Ale Festival celebrates U.S. brewers who have embraced the styles of Saison, Biere de Garde and Brettanamyoces inflected beers which vary from light to strong, earthy, spicy, fruity and funky tart.

Held at North Portand's Saraveza Tavern and neighboring Bad Habit Room on Saturday and Sunday March 30th and 31st the festival will feature more than 20 farmhouse style beers from across the country, many never before available and from both established and new breweries. The 2 day festival will feature rotating taps at both Saraveza and the Bad Habit Room changing over 2 days and outdoor seating and standing space on N. Michigan. Widmer Brothers' Alchemy Ale

Yesterday, I received a package in the mail. Packages delivered to my house usually contain beer. This one was unique.  I'll let the pictures do the talking...

As you may have surmised, the answer to the mystery is Alchemy Ale, Widmer's new year-round release. Here are a few details about Alchemy:

"We practice alchemy every day turning water, malt, hops and yeast into liquid gold. Alchemy Ale melds years of experimentation and our special Alchemy hop blend, in a pure expression of brewing art and science. Join us in unlocking the mystery to the perfectly balanced, perfectly hopped ale. Alchemy hops are a blend of choice hops from the Pacific Northwest, hand-selected by our brewers each year. This secret blend is the backbone of all our beers, and the magic behind Alchemy Ale."

About the Beer
  • Availability: Year-Round
  • Flavor Points: Bright, distinct Alchemy hop character balanced with hints of caramel and a remarkably smooth finish.
  • Malts: Pale, Caramel, Munich, Vienna, Extra Special
  • ABV: 5.8%, 40 IBU

Alchemy's release date has not been formally announced, but I expect it will be available soon. I'll taste and post my thoughts on it shortly!
