Description:"The coffee lover’s consummate beer. Brewed with an abundance
of flaked oats, bitter and imported chocolates, and Sumatra and Kona coffee,
this stout has an intense fresh-roasted java nose topped with a frothy,
cinnamon-colored head that goes forever." — Founders Brewing Co. Random thoughts: Founders does not distribute in Oregon. I've heard good things about this beer and jumped at the chance to try it when I came across it during a trip to Ohio. I'm a big fan of stouts, but never thought about having one for breakfast. Seems to be good enough for the baby pictured on the bottle...
The tasting:Black in color, with a dark tan had that dissipates fairly quickly. Aroma of espresso, chocolate, and roasted malt. The coffee notes dominate. Taste mirrors the aroma with the addition of mocha, a touch of smoky malt, and light earthy hop bitterness. The coffee flavor has a very deep roast. Although this beer is rated at 60 IBUs, the overall bitterness is relatively low. Alcohol is not noticeable in aroma, but a touch is noticeable in flavor. Considering this an 8.3% ABV brew, it's quite stealthy! Breakfast Stout is full-bodied and has a creamy smooth mouth feel. It's softly carbonated and finishes with smoky malts and coffee.
Rating: 4 star. Really Good! I want this again! Coffee is the star of this beer and oatmeal plays supporting role. With both of those ingredients, I can certainly understand why some might choose to have this for breakfast. If you want to try this beer, find it quickly! This is a seasonal that's only available from October through February. I must have picked up one of the last bottles. Lucky me!
