Description:  "The coffee lover’s consummate beer. Brewed with an abundance of flaked oats, bitter and imported chocolates, and Sumatra and Kona coffee, this stout has an intense fresh-roasted java nose topped with a frothy, cinnamon-colored head that goes forever." — Founders Brewing Co.

Random thoughts:   Founders does not distribute in Oregon. I've heard good things about this beer and jumped at the chance to try it when I came across it during a trip to Ohio.  I'm a big fan of stouts, but never thought about having one for breakfast. Seems to be good enough for the baby pictured on the bottle...

The tasting:  Black in color, with a dark tan had that dissipates fairly quickly. Aroma of espresso, chocolate, and roasted malt. The coffee notes dominate. Taste mirrors the aroma with the addition of mocha, a touch of smoky malt, and light earthy hop bitterness. The coffee flavor has a very deep roast. Although this beer is rated at 60 IBUs, the overall bitterness is relatively low. Alcohol is not noticeable in aroma, but a touch is noticeable in flavor. Considering this an 8.3% ABV brew, it's quite stealthy! Breakfast Stout is full-bodied and has a creamy smooth mouth feel. It's softly carbonated and finishes with smoky malts and coffee.

Rating: 4 star. Really Good!  I want this again!  Coffee is the star of this beer and oatmeal plays supporting role. With both of those ingredients, I can certainly understand why some might choose to have this for breakfast. If you want to try this beer, find it quickly! This is a seasonal that's only available from October through February. I must have picked up one of the last bottles.  Lucky me!

  1. Portland is flush with great beers, but Founders is one brewery at the top of my list that I'd love to see imported to PDX. Their entire lineup is delicious, and Backwoods Bastard has always been a dear, dear friend to me... Oh, and great photo hexaptych!

PS - Those come in six packs, please send me the other 5.

  2. Thanks Matt. This is the only Founders beer I've had the pleasure of tasting, but I'd love to sample more.

I wish I had five more! I bought this as a single at Whole Foods. Cheers!

  3. This one is getting high praise from all over. I'm trying to find it in Corvallis. We don't have a Whole Foods, but I'm keeping my eye open in other stores.
