Fresh (or wet) Hop Season is here! The vast majority of beer is made with dried hops. Fresh hop beers are made with—well, fresh hops that are harvested, rushed to the breweries, and thrown into the brew literally hours after they're harvested.
Fresh hop beers contain volatile compounds that are typically lost during the hop kilning (drying process). These compounds are said to contribute aromas and flavors not found in regularly-hopped beers.
I've tasted a handful of fresh hopped beers and the verdict is still out for me. You be the judge—and today is your lucky day! The Portland Fresh Hop Beer Fest is being held at Oaks Park from noon to 8pm. Details are listed below. To get a flavor of what do expect, here's my recap of the 2010 Fresh Hop Tastival.
What are your favorite Fresh Hop beers? If you attend the fest, let me know what you think.
