Puckerfest: Portland's Premier Sour Beer Extravaganza

Puckerfest taplist - July 21, 2011
Sour, wild, and funky beer lovers rejoice! Belmont Station's week long Puckerfest kicks off this Friday, July 13. The full press release and event schedule is listed at the end of the post.

I actually attended Puckerfest last year on Block 15 Night, but never got around to posting about it. Lazy beer blogger...I know. Consider this my better-late-than-never recap.

The picture to the right shows some of the beers that were served that evening (July 21, 2011). Beers listed in red are sour / wild ales. I tasted Block 15's Enchanted and Ferme de La Ville '11, and thought both were great. I had the pleasure of chatting with Nick Arnzer, Block 15 owner, recently at The Oregon Garden Brewfest. His team is doing some incredible work with their barrel aging (including solera) and wild ale programs! I really need to make a trip down to Corvallis to visit Block 15 one of these days.

But my favorite beer of the evening (and one of my favorites from 2011, as a whole) was Belmont Station's 14th Anniversary Ale by Upright. I'm not a big fan of gin--but the flavor imparted by the gin barrel along with the apricot and herbs was magical! It looks like Belmont Station will be selling a few bottles of their 14th Anniversary Ale at Puckerfest. I would advise you to buy one if you can.

If I may digress, another of my most memorable beers of 2011 was Breakside's Double-Gin Barrel Wit. Something about those gin barrels....

Anyway, if you like sour beers, this is were you need to be. I wonder if I can rent a room near Belmont Station from July 13-19th?

A pair of Puckerfest '11 sours. I forgot which ones.

PUCKERFEST--our annual celebration of Sour and Wild Beers--takes place Friday July 13 - Thursday July 19 Noon - 11PM daily in our Biercafe. We'll have up to 14 sour and wild ales on tap daily. Here's a listing of special events during the festival:

Oakshire Brewmaster Matt van Wyk and Flat Tail Brewmaster Dave Marliave team up to kick off Puckerfest with some special treats. Matt is bringing his Framboise, Skookumchuck Wild Ale, Lost Keg Wild Ale (which Matt says is a “wild amber, lost and then found”), and Gin Barrel Aged Frederic's Lost Arm (saison aged in Gin barrels with Brett). Dave is bringing his 1st Anniversary,  2nd Anniversary Flanders Red, Vallee' Blanche sour wit, and Tamil black session sour fruit/wheat.

SATURDAY JULY 14 Noon Until... GUEUZE DRAFTS and Cantillon Bottles
It’s pretty rare to have 3 authentic Gueuzes side by side. We’ll tap a keg of Cantillon Gueuze, Tilquin Gueuze, and St. Louis Gueuze.  I remember the days when we had Cantillon bottles for sale constantly. That was before everyone caught on. Our last allotment was so small it seemed the best thing to do would be pour flights so a lot of folks can taste the brilliance of Cantillon. Flights of Cantillon Geueze, Kriek, and Rose poured from our very limited number of bottles.

Brewer/Owner Nick Arzner serves up another of his famously amazing lineups: Golden Canary,  2011 Demons Farm, & 2011 Strawberry Fields, Belmont Station 15th Anniversary (Scotch Ale  matured in rare fifteen year old Bourbon casks from Rip Van Winkle Distillery and then blended with select Bourbon barrel Oud Bruins, matured 9 & 24 months), and  a special firkin of Golden Canary with Gooseberries

Monday July 16  5 – 8PM UPRIGHT
Brewers Alex Ganum, Gerritt Ill, and Bobby Birk present another stunning display of barrel-aging and blending: Fantasia (barrel fermented with Baird Family Orchard peaches and a mix of souring yeasts and bacteria, lambic-esque), Lactovasilios (barrel fermented Berliner-weisse style sour ale), Blend Love (mix of barrel aged wheat and rye beers with raspberries and cherries), De la Seven (one-off variant of Upright's strong saison fermented with yeast from the De la Senne brewery of Belgium and aged with brettanomyces in Patton Valley wine barrels), Belmont Station 14th Anniversary - a blend of gin and wine barrel aged wheat beer with apricot puree, Barrel aged Five (hoppy saison matured in former Fantasia barrels with the spent peaches), Late Harvest (farmhouse-style brown ale aged in Ransom wine, whiskey, and gin barrels). Plus we’ll sell a limited number of bottles of Belmont Station 14th Anniversary Beer

Charlie Devereux and Matt Swihart have led a parade of Puckerfesters each year with their phenomenal Krieks and fresh cherries. Let’s do it again! Can’t wait. More details soon.

Logsdon Farmhouse Ales Owner/Brewmaster Dave Logsdon will tap Cerasus  organic kriek beer, a barrel-aged Flanders style red ale with two pounds of fruit added per gallon of beer & Barrel-aged SeizoenBretta, farmhouse Saison with Brettanomyces.   The Commons Brewers grace us with Eleanor, Wine barrel aged Farmhouse Ale made with magic (is that a legal ingredient?), BeneTibi, a 100% Brett Lambicus fermented beer with sour cherries and cider pressings, and a special one-off TBA.

At 3PM we’ll tap an oak pin of New Belgium Oscar, one of the two Foeder-aged sour beers that Lauren and Eric Salazar use as the base blending beers for the Lips of Faith Series and we’ll also have a rare keg of Blackberry Whiskey Sour on tap beginning at noon. The Cascade crew are still deciding what blends they’ll deliver but you know they’ll be great!

Solera, Rock Bottom, Big Al’s, Buckman Botanical, Mikkeller, Bahnhoff, and more. We’ll see how they roll… Check http://www.belmont-station.com/ for daily tap list and http://www.puckerfest.com/ for updates.

Please be aware:
In order that we can serve everyone as quickly as possible our Biercafe will be CASH ONLY during Puckerfest. We have an ATM on-site.
