Description: "The 2012 Mission St. Anniversary Ale showcases complex malt flavors with roasty notes layered in and medium hop character. It is a blend of three incredible brews carefully blended for maximum aroma and flavor. We affectionately call this brew an Imperial Brown Ale." — Steinhaus Brewing Co.

Random thoughts:  Mission St. is brewed by Firestone Walker under the Steinhaus Brewing name and is distributed by Trader Joe's. While Mission St. beers are not "regular" Firestone Walker brews repackaged under a different label, they come from a brewery that produces a stellar line of beers and some phenomenal blended Anniversary Ales. I was impressed that this $2.99 beer is a blend of three ales. You don't typically see that.

The tasting:  Dark brown with faint reddish hues, it has an off white head that dissipates fairly quickly. Aroma of toasted grains, vanilla, molasses, and light alcohol—quite nice overall. Flavor is similar to the nose with the addition of toasted malt, caramel malt, cocoa, coffee, and plum. It has a nice light sweetness that's not overpowering. Hop bitterness is light and alcohol is noticeable throughout. It's medium bodied, softly carbonated, and has a smooth mouth feel.  It finishes with warming alcohol and light molasses.

Rating:  4 star.  Really Good!  I want this again!   First and foremost, go out and buy this beer now! At $2.99 a bomber, it's a screaming value. It's complex with many layers of flavor. Although it has some rough alcohol edges, it tastes great right now! If properly cellared, it should only improve over time. I went back to Trader Joe's yesterday and picked up three more bottles. I can't wait to see how it evolves—assuming I can wait. Thanks to the good folks at Firestone Walker and Trader Joe's for giving us this gem!

Have you tasted Mission St. 2012 Anniversary Ale?  If you can find a better bomber for less than $3, please let me know!

I absolutely love this beer. I wish Trader Joes carried it more frequently.
