Description:  "When we set out to brew, we use imagination and salvation to guide us- not necessarily style guidelines. It’s the Belgian way. So, Ameri-Belgo and IPA both being styles, the branding begged for New Belgium whimsy to liven things up. Hmmm Belgo sounds like a Belgian disco. Hops like to party. Next thing you know, we bust out a disco-ball and brewers started groovin. Hops started hoppin. Add in an authentic Trappist yeast strain and the place brewed into a frenzy of citrus hoppy folly.— New Belgium Brewing Co.

Random thoughts:  I previously profiled and enjoyed Raging Bitch, Flying Dog's Belgian-style IPA. Since then, Flying Dog has stopped distributing to Oregon. So I'm glad to see New Belgium serving up BELGO as a year-round offering. This is part of my IPA Diversity series.

The tasting:  Golden in color, slightly hazy with a head of fine white bubbles that dissipates slowly. Belgian yeast aromatics of pepper and clove are front and center. There's a lot going on in the aroma department with this beer! In addition to the spice, piney and citrus hops, and tropical fruit (pineapple) are noticeable. Flavor starts with citrus and piney hops with a biscuit malt backbone. In the middle, the pepper and clove come through. Alcohol is not noticeable in aroma. Hop bitterness is present throughout. BELGO is light to medum bodied and moderately carbonated. It finishes with lingering clove and citrus hops and leaves the mouth quite dry.

Rating:  4 star.  Really Good!  I want this again!  The IPA is such a great style that works well with a wide variety of adaptations—and Belgian-style is one of them. If you like IPAs and the spicy flavors typical in Belgian-styled brews, give BELGO a try. It's the best of both worlds in a single bottle.

Have you tasted BELGO or any other Belgian-style IPAs?

  1. Thanks for the review! I hope to see more and more Belgian IPAs in the future. This is such a cool style and I think Belgo is a great example of it.
