Description:  "This is an aggressive ale. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth. We would suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory–maybe something with a multi-million dollar ad campaign aimed at convincing you it’s made in a little brewery, or one that implies that their tasteless fizzy yellow beverage will give you more sex appeal. Perhaps you think multi-million dollar ad campaigns make things taste better. Perhaps you’re mouthing your words as you read this." — Stone Brewing Co.

Random thoughts:   The new book, The Craft of Stone Brewing Co.: Liquid Lore, Epic Recipes, and and Unabashed Arrogance, tells the story of Arrogant Bastard's creation. Essentially it was mistake. Stone co-founder Steve Wagner added too much malt. Wagner and Greg Koch were actually hesitant to release it because they didn't think consumers were ready for such an aggressive beer.

The tasting:  Dark copper in color with long lingering off-white head that left lots of lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel and toasted malt, piney hops, and a touch of alcohol. Overall, aroma leans toward malt. Flavor again begins with a strong dose of caramel and roasted malt followed by healthy waves of citrus and piney hops. Although the hops are strong, they're balanced by sweet malts. Arrogant Bastard is medium bodied, moderately carbonated and has a syrupy mouth feel. It finished semi-dry with caramel malt and  a lingering piney hop bitterness.

Rating:  4 star.  Really Good!  I want this again!   This beer has it allloads of hops and loads of malts that all meld together in perfect balance. Like Stone says, it's an aggressive ale. If you're a fan of the fizzy yellow stuff, you'd be best served to move along...

  1. I've alway liked this beer. The Double Bastard is excellent. Have you tried the Double?

  2. I have not. I read that it was just released. Since it's only available once per year, I should probably track down a bottle soon!

  3. I found it at Market of Choice.
