Description:"Citra hops lend their name to this interpretation of a golden ale, but that’s not all they bring to the party. Their striking citrus aroma and thirst-quenching flavor are the perfect pairing for soft malt notes. Together they create a beer that’s full in flavor and uniquely refreshing.” — Widmer Brewing Co.
Random thoughts: This is Widmer Bros.' new summer seasonal release. It showcases the Citra hop, just like X-114 IPA, the first in Widmer's Rotator IPA series. This is part of my 2nd series on Summer seasonals.
The tasting: Gold in color, slightly hazy, with a white head that dissipated slowly. Aroma of grapefruit hops, orange peel, and bready malt. Very nice! In Widmer's X-114 IPA (which contains Citra hops), I noticed an amazing tropical fruit aroma, but I didn't notice the same in Citra Summer Blonde. Regardless, it has a great aroma. Bready malt dominates in flavor along with some grassy hops. That's about all I got. It doesn't have a lot of sweetness or hop bitterness. It's light bodied, moderately carbonated, and has a slightly effervescent mouth feel. It finishes with bready malt.
Rating: 3 star. Good. I would drink this again if someone gives it to me. I was a bit let down by Citra Summer Blonde. It started off with an amazing aroma, but those elements didn't carry over into the flavor. Still, it's a decent summer brew. Give it a try while you can—fall and winter beers are approaching!
Have you tried Citra Summer Blonde or any other Widmer Bros. beers?
