Beer Run: Belgian Brews

Since I started this blog, I've only tasted a handful of Belgian beers.  That's about to change!  I pulled together this mix of Belgian style beers and will be tasting them during the upcoming weeks:

  • Hoegaarden (Witbier), Brouwerij van Hoegaarden, Hoegaarden, Belgium
  • Monk's Blood (Belgian Strong Dark Ale), 21st Amendment Brewery, San Francisco, CA
  • Silk Lady (Belgian Golden Ale), Dick's Brewing Co., Centralia, WA
  • Star Island Single (Belgian Golden Ale), Smuttynose Brewing, Portsmouth NH
  • PranQster (Belgian Golden Ale), North Coast Brewing, Fort Bragg, CA
  • True Blonde Dubbel (Belgian Golden Ale), Ska Brewing, Durango, CO
  • White Rascal (Witbier), Avery Brewing, Boulder, CO

Have you had any of these beers?  What are your favorite Belgians?

  1. Mmmm... Pranqster. Very delicious, very big. The White Rascal is nice as well, but I'm less of a wit guy.

  2. I absolutely love Monk's Blood. But my favorite Belgian beers are Saison Dupont and Rodenbach Gran Cru. As for American- Belgian style beers, you cannot go wrong with anything from Ommegang

  3. Ah, Belgians. Once you've gone to Brussels, you never want to go back...

Second on Rodenbach Grand Cru, and I'd add kindred Duchesse de Bourgogne and Liefmanns. Other classics to put on the list include Duvel, the Trappists (my personal fave is Orval), the lambic family--maybe start with fruit lambic--Delirium Tremens, and De La Senne's Taras Boulba. There are tons more, but apparently these are the ones that sprang to the top of my mind. Of the North American Belgo-influenced beers, Ommegang is a good suggestion, as are Allagash and Unibroue.

  4. Thanks for the great suggestions guys! I have a Rodenbach in the beer fridge. I spaced. Should have included it in this group. I'll start gathering Belgian Round 2 based on these suggestions.

Jeff, I happen to be working my way though 4 Unibroue beers as well. I wrote up Maudite last week. Good stuff...
