Description: "Fruity esters and generous dry-hopping give this 9% ABV ale the aroma of tropical fruit while a touch of English crystal malt provides the perfect backdrop for tangy hop flavors of tangerine and mango. Random thoughts: One Hit Wonder was brewed for Oskar Blues' G'Night relaunch party on February 19. G'Night was originally called Gordon, but OB changed the name after receiving a cease and desist order from Gordon Biersch. Anyway, One Hit Wonder was a one-time brew served only at OB's Tasty Weasel Taproom. Thanks to the crew at OB for sending me a can to sample! I visited the brewery last fall—check out the photo essay of my visit.
The tasting: Orange / copper in color with a fluffy white head that dissipated slowly. This beer has serious body. I swirled it around the glass, and could see legs slowly creeping down the sides of the glass. BIG aroma of tropical fruit (mango and guava), piney hops and a touch of boozy alcohol. Flavor of citrus hops, and some mixed fruit that I can't identify. I can't taste the mango that was noticeable in aroma. The alcohol is noticeable, but not overpowering. While it's highly bitter (about the level typical of an Imperial IPA), it has a nice caramel malt backbone. It finishes with sweet malt and bitter citrus hops. Very drinkable for an Imperial. The 9.0% ABV is stealthy!
Rating: 4 star. Really Good! I want this again! Unfortunately, that's not going to happen because this beer is gone—just like the many one hit wonder bands of the 80's. However, don't despair. Maybe Oskar Blues will someday bring One Hit Wonder back for an encore.
