Description: "Unfiltered and unfettered, Circus Boy is a unique and refreshing American-style Hefeweizen. Is he a who? Or a what? Or perhaps some of both? Be amazed by the flavorful haze of this wonderful wheat beer." — Magic Hat Brewing Co.
Random thoughts: It's a beautiful sunny 75 degree day in Whippany, NJ. Perfect day for a hefeweizen! As luck would have it, I have one waiting for me in the fridge from my Four Weyerbachers and a Magic Hat series. I've heard a lot about Magic Hat. It's not available in Oregon, and this will be my first taste of one of their beers.
The tasting: Yellowish gold in color (very slightly hazy) with a white head that dissipated slowly. Grassy and citrus aromas, with a bit of yeast. The grass and citrus came through in flavor, along with grainy wheat and black pepper. Light bodied, lightly carbonated, it had a flat mouth feel. Circus Boy finished with grassy hop bitterness and peppery spice. It was refreshing though, drinkable, and its low ABV content (4.5%) make it a good session beer.
Rating: 3 star. Good. I would drink this again if someone gives it to me. Maybe I had high expectations, but I felt a bit let down by this beer. The grassy aroma and flavor make Circus Boy unique. While I wasn't crazy about that flavor, I was less pleased with the flat mouth feel. The bottle had a freshness date of April 30, 2011 and I bought it cold. So I have no reason to believe it was a bad bottle. Anyway, I'd still like to try more Magic Hat brews, and will do so whenever I can find them.
Have you tried Circus Boy? What are your favorite Magic Hat beers?
