Description: "Not for the faint-hearted. Our stout rewards the palate with robust flavor of roasted malts (malts are roasted like coffee beans) and heavy hops. A creamy smooth surprise." — Lost Coast Brewery
Random thoughts: I can't believe I haven't reviewed an "ordinary" stout yet. I'm currently tasting several Imperial Stouts, but this is the first stout. For 2011, I'm focusing on styles that are new to me. Stouts are at the top of my list. In fact, I'm in the process of making my own Cream Stout homebrew.
The tasting: VERY dark brown—near black in color with a tan head that dissipated slowly. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, and dark chocolate. It has a very light earthy hop presence. Taste is very similar to the aroma with the addition of citrus hops. Its nicely balanced. Light to medium bodied (I expected it to be thicker) with a finish of chocolate malt. It has medium carbonation, a smooth mouth feel, and is very drinkable.
Rating: 4 star. Really Good! I want this again! What a great beer for my first stout review. This is also the first Lost Coast beer I tasted. I'll be looking for more of their brews, as well as more stouts in general.
