Description:  "Tannen Bomb is our Strong Ale with a massive malt complex brewed especially to take the chill off the cold winter months and bring warmth and cheer to the holiday season. This is a beer you can sink your teeth into and stay a while.— Golden Valley Brewing Co.

Random thoughts:   This is the 20th of my winter seasonal reviews.  I'm ready for some spring beers.

The tasting:   Dark reddish orange in color (slightly hazy) with an off-white head that dissipated slowly and left some lacing on the glass.  Aroma of sweet and caramel malts with some light floral hops.  Flavor is very similar to taste, with the addition of vanilla and alcohol.  Although this is a malt heavy brew, it's very well balanced.  Body is medium, it's lightly carbonated, and has a creamy mouth feel.  The taste of alcohol is noticeable, but it provides a very nice warming feeling in the finish.  Very drinkable despite the higher alcohol content.
Rating:  5 star.  Liquid Perfection!   This was such an unexpected surprise.  Before drinking this, I knew nothing about Tannen Bomb or Golden Valley Brewing.  I just picked it up last month at New Seasons when I was looking for every winter seasonal I could find.  On one hand, I wish I tasted it sooner so I could have helped to spread the word about this beer before the holidays.  On the other hand, after looking back at 19 other winter beers, I can say Tannen Bomb has been my favorite!  I'll have to visit Golden Valley's brewpub in McMinnville and sample more of their beers!

  1. Interesting... I really loved this beer a few years ago, then after a couple years when it was very bland I stopped trying it. Sounds like a good batch this year, if I see it I'll grab some!

  2. If you try it this season, please let me know what you think of it Bill. A friend told me she thought this year's edition was a bit sweet, and she preferred it last year.

  3. I went to Golden Valley recently and had the Bomb. I thought it was a nice beer, but I wouldn't give it a 5. Maybe a 3. It wasn't the full tasting beer I was expecting. A little light tasting for the color. I was a little disappointed in the food and service.

  4. I really should revisit Tannen Bomb this year and see if it lives up to the high bar I set for it.

BTW, I just read that GVB is opening a new brewpub in Beaverton. The westside of Portland is starved for breweries and brewpubs. So I'm thrilled to soon have a new option closer to home!
