Description:  "Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process.  A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew."  — Nectar Ales

Random thoughts:  A beer with hemp?!?  Is someone going to break down my door as I drink this?  Worry not, according to Wikipedia, hemp contains less than 0.3% THC (the chemical that causes physical and/or psychological effects), while cultivars grown for marijuana contain anywhere from 6% to > 20% THC.  You can decide for yourself if that's good or bad.  I picked this one up at a local homebrew shop.  This is the second beer I sampled from Nectar Ales, which is owned by Firestone Walker Brewing Co.

The tasting:  Poured a dark reddish brown with an off-white head that dissipated quickly.  No lacing.   Aroma is mainly roasted malts.  Flavor is again roasted malts, with some nuttiness, but without a lot of hops.  I don't know what hemp taste likes, but I expect the nutty flavor is coming from it.  Medium bodied, smooth, and and very drinkable.

Rating:  3 star.  Good.  I would drink this if someone gave it to me.  I like this beer.  I don't know what the hemp really adds to it.  But if nothing else, it makes for some nice conversation.

Have you tried Humboldt Brown or any other hemp ales?  Any recommendations?

  1. I tried this last night and I thought it was a really nice flavor. It was a little thick, but the nutiness of the beer is quite enjoyable. As someone who knows what canabis tastes like, I can say the beer has just a subtle note of the flavor which is more noticable in the aftertaste when the nut flavor wanes.
