Pumpkin Ale Deathmatch '10 — Take the Poll!

I’m not a big fan of fruit or vegetable beer.  But, since I’m making an effort to sample and review fall seasonals, I thought I should include an obligatory pumpkin beer.  When I went to the store, I saw not one, but two Pumpkin Ales.  So I bought both, took them home, and Latha and I tasted them.  We were deadlocked.  We could not agree on which one was better.

I decided this would be a great opportunity to pit the two Pumpkin Ales in a “Thunderdome” style cage- match.  You know, “Two pumpkin beers enter, only one walks out.....”  Or if you prefer Hobbits, “One Pumpkin Beer to rule them all...”  That sort of thing.

So to resolve our split decision, I need the help of you, dear readers, to determine the king of all autumnal gourd beers.  Here are your contenders:

In the Orange corner:

The Pride of the East.
Weighing in at 7.0% ABV, and 28 IBUs tall.
Wearing a robe of real pumpkin and brown sugar, with allspice, cinnamon, and nutmeg trim...

Dogfish Head Craft Brewery’s Punkin Ale!

In the Black corner:

The Best of the West.
Weighing in at 5.2% ABV, and 12 IBUs tall.
Wearing a robe of roasted pumpkin and crystal malts, with cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg trim...

The rules are simple.  Readers vote to decide.  The voting box will be on top right side of my blog site.  Vote will be open for two weeks.  Here are your voting options:

What’s THE best Pumpkin Ale?
  • Punkin Ale by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery
  • America's Original Pumpkin Ale by Buffalo Bill's Brewery
  • Some other Pumpkin Beer
  • Neither.  Pumpkins belong in pies, not beer!

I will publish my reviews of each beer after the voting ends.  May the best pumpkin beer win.....

  1. I tasted the Buffalo Bill years ago. Just this year I bought Julie the Dogfish Head. Let me just say that neither of us are fans of beers made with gourds.

  2. You should really try the Southern Tier Pumking.

  3. Thanks for the tip Jason. I wasn't too crazy about either of these.
